Police hope video will help find homeless man’s attacker in Vermont Knolls

Investigators hope a fuzzy surveillance video will help identify the person who stabbed to death a homeless man Nov. 7 on a busy street.

Marcelo Campos, a 62-year-old Latino, was in front of the Los Angeles County Administrative Building at 8300 S. Vermont Ave. in the Vermont Knolls area of South Los Angeles when he was stabbed multiple times, said Los Angeles Police South Bureau Homicide Officer Robert Jamieson.

Witnesses said the attacker was a Latino or black man about 5 feet 10 and weighing 160 to 170 pounds. He was wearing dark clothing and had a shirt covering his face, Jamieson said.

Investigators think Campos, who also was known as Leonidas Solano, Leones Cobias and Leonidas Cubia, got into an argument with the assailant before he was stabbed around 6:30 p.m.

The video was taken from a surveillance camera outside a U.S. Postal Service office at 8200 S. Vermont Ave., about a block north of where Campos was stabbed.

Campos was a transient who lived in the area, but Jamieson said he had been homeless and previously lived in the East Los Angeles and Koreatown areas.

Anyone with information is asked to call Jamieson or Sgt. Paul Funicello at (323) 786-5110. Those wishing to remain anonymous should call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.
