Barring a last-minute stay, Ronald Phillips, 43, will be put to death at 10 a.m. Wednesday, the first execution in Ohio in three years. Phillips was 19 in 1993 when he raped and beat to death the 3-year-old daughter of his girlfriend in Akron.
Convicted child rapist and murderer Ronald Phillips was set to die by lethal injection Wednesday morning in Ohio after the U.S. Supreme Court denied his requests for more time to pursue legal challenges, reports the Akron Beacon Journal. Phillips, 43, of Akron, was 19 when he raped and beat to death Sheila Marie Evans, the 3-year-old daughter of his girlfriend. Sheila Marie died on Jan. 18, 1993. Her mother, Fae Amanda Evans, was convicted of involuntary manslaughter for failing to protect her daughter and died of cancer in prison in 2008.
Phillips was brought into the death house at 10:14 a.m. Tuesday at the maximum security Southern Ohio Correctional Facility near Lucasville, according to the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction. Phillips requested an evening meal of pizza and Pepsi. The prison warden was scheduled to read the death warrant to Phillips at 9:45 a.m. today. Then, at 10 a.m., unless there is a stay, Phillips will be the first person to be executed in Ohio in 3½ years using the state’s new three-drug lethal injection method.
